Hello friends and family!
I am so excited to announce that I will be going on the World Race this upcoming August. I cannot wait to travel with a team from all over America to 6 different countries over 11 months, and partner with what God is already doing in each location! I have been interested in going on The Race for the past 3 years, and I am so excited that my time to be sent out into the nations is coming soon.
This May I will be graduating from Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and many people have been asking why I am choosing to go on a year of missions rather than starting a reliable job, and here is my answer:
When I was 5 years old, Children of The World came to my church, and it changed my life. This organization brings orphan children from all around the world to America, to travel from church to church, hoping to find forever families, and raise awareness of poverty around the world. These beautiful children sang songs in their native tongue, and shared their testimonies of how God had saved them and provided for them as His children. After the service, I met some children from different countries all over Africa, and learned more about them and what they had gone through. Their lives seemed so much harder than mine, but they were still beaming with Joy. I remember feeling a tug on my heart for the orphan children, and knew that when I grew up, I wanted to help children like them.
Over the next few years, my heart for Africa grew as I studied more about the beautiful country. In late Elementary school I had 4 pen-pals from Kenya, including Arnold and Vanessa, who were desk mates in the same grade as me. Receiving their letters was one of the best parts of my childhood. As I grew up, my heart increased for orphans, and in Highschool I studied as a Midwifes assistant, hoping that I could bring these skills onto the mission field wherever God called me. I became passionate about women’s health and pre and postnatal care for babies. After more prayer, I felt led into nursing school, where God has given me more practical skills that can be used overseas, along with a deeper heart for His people. Getting to know the hundreds of patients I have had the privilege of taking care of the past few years has shown me that God cares for each person in the world. He does not just want them well, or no longer in a hospital, but Jesus died on a cross in order for everyone to have eternal life with Him.
Last March I went to Kenya for the first time. This was a trip I had been waiting for since I was 5 years old. A group of 20 nursing students along with a few nursing faculty spent 2 weeks living at an orphanage where we were able to help care for children from newborn to 3 years of age. I still remember the moment I stepped into the nursery, and was handed sweet 5 month old Shelley to care for while we were there. This was a moment I had dreamed about for my entire life, and I felt God telling me that this is what He created my heart for, loving His children. We also had the opportunity to run 5 full days of clinics, where we were able to partner with local Nurses and Doctors to care for the families in their community. This trip was a glimpse of what I hope to be doing the rest of my life, as I feel called to long term missions.
The Race is just the beginning, and I cannot wait!
